Refreshments: None on route. The Bear Motel and The Rose and Crown in Burwash

This walk after crossing the Dudwell valley and then climbs to what must be one of the highest points in the area. There are good views all round. To the north you can almost see to the Ashdown Forest and in the south the Southdowns and the coast can be seen. Brightling Observatory is passed but now a days it is almost hidden behind the trees. On the return leg of this walk the conveyer belt from the Gypsum mine is crossed. This takes the gypsum from the mine to the processing mill at Mountfield.

Directions: Start Burwash car park. OS Grid Ref. TQ673246. Nearby post code TN19 7ET

  1. Leave the car park by the path between the toilets and The Bear Motel, into a field and continue downhill with the hedge on the right, to locate a footbridge in the hedge on the right. Cross the bridge, go through a gate and follow the fence across the next field to a small gate.

  2. Pass through the gate and continue in the same direction keeping the hedge on the right, to locate a footpath gate in the hedge. Go through the gate, and head downhill to the bottom right hand corner of the field. Go through a gateway in the corner of the field and continue downhill, keeping the hedge on the left.

  3. Cross a stile onto the road, turn right along the road to Batemans House. In front of the house take the farm drive on the left. Continue along the farm drive, passing through two gates into the farm yard. Continue forward, passing to the left of the farm buildings to where the track turns sharp right behind the cattle barn, do not follow the track, but take the path straight on into the wood.

  4. Follow the path uphill through the wood with a field to the left. On reaching a gate, go through it and follow the edge of the field to a gate into the forest on the right. Continue on a path through the forest to a staggered crossing of paths and forest ride.

  5. Turn left and then right, to continue uphill on a small path, ignoring a track going off to the right. Pass to the left of a house and then continue to the road.

  6. Turn left on the road and after passing the entrance to the forest on the right.  Take the signed footpath on the right which is at the edge of the forest. There are some cattle handling pens here.

  7. Having navigated around the cattle pens, continue between the fences with the forest on the right and a field on the left, to a stile in the corner beside a gate. Cross the stile and head uphill, aiming for the top right hand corner of the field. Pass into the next field and continue uphill with the woodland on the left, to a gate. Go through the gate and head straight across the paddock to a gate onto an access road.

  8. Cross the access road into the field opposite and then continue forward with the hedge on your left to a stile. Cross the stile and then bear right to a stile almost in the middle of the bottom hedge.

  9. Cross the stile and continue into the next field. Bear left to the far left-hand corner of the field to locate a stile into the woodland. Cross the stile into the woodland and then follow a path crossing a footbridge and then a stile into a field.

  10. Continue forward in the field to a gate and stile in the field corner. Cross the stile and then continue straight up across the field keeping about the same distance from the hedge on the left to locate a stile into the woodland.

  11. Cross the stile and then at a junction turn left and follow this forest road to its junction with a road. Turn left along the road and then turn right onto a footpath going through a hedge just past the observatory.

  12. Continue forward and then follow a line of telegraph poles across the field, pass to the left of the buildings. Continue following the telegraph poles until just before a pond, here turn left to a gap in the hedge onto the road. (There is sometimes a path to the left of the line of telegraph poles follow it if you find it).

  13. Turn right along the road to a junction and then turn left. Continue along the road to the first gateway on the left. Turn left through the gateway and then follow the track across the field into the forest.

  14. On entering the forest keep left on the main track and then when the track bends right keep left. Continue until you come to the conveyor belt from the Gypsum mine. Cross over the bridge over the conveyor belt and then Stay on this track ignoring any side paths to eventually arrive at a gate into a field.

  15. Pass through the gate into the field and continue forward with the forest on your left until a house comes into view, and then head to a gate to the right of the house. Pass through the gate and follow the enclosed track to a junction and then turn right to a road. At the road, turn left, cross a stream, and then climb steeply before dropping downhill to a junction.

  16. At the road junction, cross over and take the path opposite through an archway in hedge beside a garden to cross a stile into a field. Bear right across the field to a gate in a wooden fence. Go through the gate and then bear left towards two trees in the middle of a field. Having passed the trees, continue in the same direction to a hedge, and then turn left to follow the hedge to a stile in the corner.

  17. Cross the stile into the woodland and then follow the path to a stile. Cross the stile into a field and bear right, crossing the field to the fence corner and then continue to a stile in the far left-hand corner of the field.

  18. Cross the stile into a wood and continue forward to exit the wood by a stile. Continue forward across a field keeping the hedge on your right, to a gateway in the field corner.

  19. Pass through the gateway and bear right across the field towards the left end of the woodland. Locate a stile, and cross it into a wood and follow a challenging path downhill through the wood (the rocks can be slippery).

  20. Where the path joins a house access track, turn left to a road and then turn right on the road. Continue on the road to a footpath gate on the left, just before the road starts to go uphill. Go through the gate and follow a path uphill through a small wood.

  21. Enter a field and then turn right and follow the edge of the field to the corner. At the corner of the field, turn left and continue, following the edge of the field to a gateway. Turn right through the gateway and then continue with the woodland on the left until a path goes into the woodland.

  22. Follow the path through the woodland to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge into the field and then continue up the left side of the field back to the car park.
