This walk leaves Heathfield by the path beside the antique shop called “The Greenhouse”. This path goes downhill to the old railway station from there the walk continues to the Cuckoo Trail. The Cuckoo Trail is followed for a short distance to Sandy Cross. From Sandy Cross the walk goes through Sapperton Wood which has many wild flowers in spring and then continues through meadows to Hidden Spring Vineyard. More meadows with wild flowers and butterflies are passed through before Swansbrook Lane is joined. This quiet lane is followed for about a mile to the hamlet of Gun Hill. From Gun Hill part of the Wealdway is followed passing through Hale Farm Campsite before arriving at Chiddingly. Leaving Chiddingly along the Vanguard Way it is not long before the quiet Dern Lane is joined. The verges of this lane are full of spring flowers. Arriving at Horam the Cuckoo Trail is then followed back to Heathfield.
Start. Mill road car park (behind the fire station, west end of the high street).

Leave the car park by the steps in the north east corner down to the main road and then turn right. Continue along the high street to an antique shop on the right (The Greenhouse). Turn right on a path just past the shop.
Continue downhill on the path to a road and then turn right along the road to a junction on the left. Turn left onto Thorny close signed to the Cuckoo Trail. Continue on a path to the left of Mary Burfield Court to a road.
Cross the road and take the path to the left of a car park (the Cuckoo Trail). Continue along the Cuckoo Trail to the second junction, Old Ghyll Road. Turn left and follow the road uphill to the main road.
Cross the main road and continue along Sandy Cross Lane to a track on the right which is signed to Shady Acres. Turn right onto the track and then keep left where the track forks. Continue along what is now a surfaced road to a road junction.
At road junction turn right through footpath gate and then continue forward with the hedge on the left following the path into a wood.
Keep left at all junctions until you arrive at a deep gully with a small stream at the bottom.
Cross the gully and stream (no bridge) and then at the path junction at the top of the bank turn right
Keep left at the next junction and then keep forward at all junctions until you arrive at a fence.At the fence turn right and keep fence on your left to a gate onto a road.
Turn left onto Grantleys Farm access road following it round to the right, passing a house to a gate into a field. Continue to follow the track through the field and then when about half way across the field bear left, crossing the field to the gate in the left hand corner.
Go through the gate and continue forward through the next gate and then bear right across the field to a stile.
Cross two stiles and then turn left to a stile in hedge on the left. Cross this stile and then turn right to a stile in the field corner.
Cross the stile in the field corner and turn left to a stile beside a gate. Cross this stile and then continue forward on a track between two ponds to a stile on the right where track bends left.
Cross the stile and follow an enclosed path to a stile onto a track. Follow the track until it turns left, here continue forward over a stile and then follow the path to a road.
Cross the road to the path between fences which is slightly to the left. Continue along the path to cross a stile and then follow a path across a field to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and then bear right to a stile.
Cross the stile and maintain the same direction to a stile in the top left corner of the field. Cross this stile and Continue forward to cross another stile on to an enclosed path. Follow the path to a road.
Turn left along the road to a junction and then continue forward across the road to the path opposite and follow this to the Cuckoo Trail (a surfaced path).
Cross over the Cuckoo Trail and go through the footpath gate. Continue to follow a path to the left and over a footbridge, and then follow the left hand edge of three fields.
In the corner of the third field continue forward into the woodland, cross a footbridge and then uphill to a stile.
Cross the stile and then cross the field heading to the right of electricity pylon to locate a stile in the field corner. Cross this stile and follow the left edge of the field to another stile. Having crossed this stile continue forward looking for stile in the left-hand hedge onto an access road.
Turn right along the access road to the main road. Cross the main road to then follow Swansbrook Lane for about a mile. After passing Prices Farm look for a footpath on the right.
Cross the stile and continue forward with hedge on the right to start with and then continue forward across the field to a stile into the pub garden. Exit the garden out onto the road and then turn left. Continue past Swansbrook Lane to a stile on the right beside Gatehouse Farm.
Cross the stile and then bear left diagonally across the field. Pass through a hedge and then turn right to follow the edge of the field and locate a footpath into woodland.
Continue on the path through the woodland to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge into a field (Hale Farm Campsite). Turn right and then keep to the right-hand side of two fields to join a track. Follow the track to a road and then turn left along the road to a kissing gate on the right.
Go through the kissing gate and continue forward on a path across the field to a stile onto an enclosed path. Follow the enclosed path to a stile into a field and then head diagonally across the field towards the Church spire. Cross a stile and continue towards the Church and exit the field onto a road.
Turn right along the road and then take the path on the right opposite the village shop and next to the phone box.
Continue following the path crossing two stiles and then keeping hedge on the right to join an enclosed path. At end of the enclosed path continue forward in the field keeping the hedge on the left to a kissing gate onto a road.
Turn right along the road and then turn left over a stile onto an enclosed path. Maintain the same direction on an enclosed path and then across a field to a stile onto a road. Cross the road and take the path through the hedge opposite and then continue down the left edge of the field to a path through a small woodland onto a road.
Turn left along the road and follow for about a mile. After passing Copford look for a footpath on the right. Follow the footpath up the steps and then continue ahead through the woodland (path can be indistinct but just keep parallel to the fence on your left).
Continue to cross a stile and then forward through a gate. Continue in the next field keeping hedge on your left to the far end.
Go through a gateway and then bear right to the far right corner of the field and then head downhill to a footbridge.
Cross the footbridge and continue forward uphill towards a farm. Go through a gate and pass to the left of farm buildings and house.
Go through a gate, cross the access road and then through another gate. Go up hill to a gate on the right. Go through this gate and continue uphill with the fence on the left to gate. Go through the gate and bear left across the field to locate a gate beside a telegraph pole.
Go through this gate and bear left to a gate onto a road. Turn right along the road to the main road. Cross the main road and turn right along the pavement into Horam.
Turn left at the road junction and then just before the road goes over a bridge cross the road and go down steps beside the bridge onto the Cuckoo Trail.
Turn left along the Cuckoo trail and follow for about one and half miles to a give way sign and then turn left on a driveway through a gate. Continue forward passing to the right of a house.
Cross a footbridge and then continue forward on a waymarked path through the woodland to join an access road. Turn right and follow the access road to a junction with a lane.
Turn right along the lane to a sharp right-hand bend and then turn left onto an enclosed path. Follow the path to a road. Cross the road and continue along Tilsmore Road to the fire station. Turn left back to the carpark.
