This is an interesting walk along the Rother Valley to the small village of Etchingham. The outward route is along the east side of the valley and the return route is on the west side. There are good views up and down the valley in both directions.

Start  Robertsbridge Station, Car park (pay and display). Nearby post codeTN32 5DD. OS Grid reference TQ733235

  1. Leave the station car park and then turn left down Station Road. At the end of the road turn left along the High-street. Continue pass the cricket ground and then across the river Rother.

  2. After crossing the river turn left onto a concrete roadway (there is a proposal for a housing estate here so at some time this may be a building site). Continue following the concrete roadway pass the old mill then turn right onto a path keeping the mill stream on your left.

  3. The path then leaves the mill stream and continues uphill. Keep right at all junction until you come to a footpath gate into a field. DO NOT go through the gate but turn left on a path through the woodland to a stile into a field.

  4. Cross the stile and then continue forward with the hedge on your right to a stile. Cross the stile and then continue forward on the access road.

  5. Where the access road bends sharp right go through the footpath gate in the deer fence on the left. After going through the gate turn left and then continue through three fields keeping the hedge on your right.

  6. At the end of the third field turn right through the footpath gate and then turn left over a stile. Having crossed the stile turn left and keep the hedge on your left to the field corner. In the field corner turn right and still keeping the hedge on your left, continue to the next corner.

  7. In this corner continue straight ahead through the hedge and then continue forward across the field. At the far end of the field continue straight across a track and then keep forward on a path to a stile.

  8. Cross the stile and then turn left. Continue downhill to a stile beside a gate. Cross the stile and then turn right keeping the stream on your right to a stile.

  9. Cross the stile and then continue forward with the stream on your right and the railway on your left to the railway crossing point.

  10. Cross the railway and then turn right. Continue with the railway on your right through three fields. At the end of the third field there is an overgrown boggy area. It is best to go round to the left of this. You want to get to the bridge over the river, which is at the right end of the row of trees on the other side of the field.

  11. Once you have got to the bridge over the river cross it and then turn right to a kissing gate. Go through the kissing gate and then turn left. Pass between a pond and the farm and then continue forward to a stile onto the access road.

  12. Cross the access road into the field and then bear right to the gate in the bottom corner of the field. Go through the gate and then continue forward towards the houses. To go into Etchingham cross the bridge beside the house, to continue the walk return to this point.

  13. Having crossed back over the bridge into the field bear right across the field towards the right-hand of the two oak trees in the opposite hedge.

  14. Cross the footbridge and stile and then bear right diagonally across the field to the gate in the top right-hand corner. Go through the gate and then continue forward following the right-hand field boundary to a footpath.

  15. Go to the road and then turn left. Continue along the road to the first access road on the left (Squibs Farm). Turn left down the access road and follow it to the farm.

  16. Turn right into the farm and then do not turn left to farm house but take the track on the left into the field. Continue forward on the track keeping the hedge on your right. In the second field follow the track through a gateway on your right and then continue forward with the hedge on your left.

  17. In the field corner turn left through a gateway and then immediately turn right over the bridge. Bear left across the field to the top left-hand corner. Continue forward down some steps and across a footbridge to join an enclosed path.

  18. At the end of the enclosed path continue forward across a track and stile into a field. Continue forward with the hedge on your right to the second footpath on the right. Go through the footpath gate and then turn left on an enclosed path. When the enclosed path ends continue forward to the gateway at the bottom of the field.

  19. Turn left through the gateway and then continue forward to the far end of the field. At the far end of the field turn right over a footbridge. Continue forward with the railway on your left through two fields.

  20. At the end of the second field go through a kissing gate and follow the enclosed path to the road. Turn left back to the station.
