Leaving Heathfield this walk follows a path through Geer’s wood before crossing the main Heathfield to Eastbourne road. On the next part of the walk there are good views across the valley to the church at Old Heathfield (the original village). The walk then continues through Sapperton Meadows a Site of Special Scientific Interest containing many wild flowers during the summer months. From Sapperton Meadows the walk passes into Sapperton Woods which has a good display of Bluebells in the spring. The walk continues through fields until it eventually joins the Cuckoo Trail just south of Horam. This old railway line which is now a surfaced path and part of the National Cycle Network is followed all the way back to Heathfield.

Start. Mill road car park (behind the fire station, west end of the high street).

  1. Leave the car park by the vehicle entrance and turn left down Mill Lane. At the bottom of the hill turn right into Tilsmore Road and follow this to the end. At the end of Tilsmore Road continue forward across the road to the enclosed path opposite.

  2. Follow the enclosed path to a lane and then turn right along the lane to an access road on the left beside Pook Reed house. Turn left onto the access road and follow until there is a gate across the road and a footpath on the left.

  3. Turn left onto the footpath and then continue on the path through woodland to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and then continue uphill to the main road.

  4. Cross the main road and then continue forward up the driveway to Theobalds Farm. When driveway bends left, turn right onto an enclosed footpath.

  5. Follow the enclosed footpath to a field and then continue forward across the field aiming to the right of the farm buildings in the distance to locate a stile in the hedge.

  6. Cross the stile and continue forward across the field to another stile.

  7. Cross this stile and then continue forward in the next field keeping the hedge on the right to a gateway in the field corner go through the gateway. Do not cross the stile but continue forward on a path across the field to a gateway in the far corner.

  8. Go through the gateway in the field corner and then turn right keeping the hedge on the right to the hedge corner. At the hedge corner continue forward to a stile in the far left hand corner of the field.

  9. In the corner of the field cross the stile and then turn right through a kissing gate into Sapperton Wood. Continue forward on a path keeping left at all the junctions to eventually arrive at a gate onto a road.

  10. Turn left onto Grantleys Farm access road following it around to the right, passing a house to a gate into a field. Continue to follow the track through the field and then when about half way across the field bear left off the track, crossing the field to a gate in the left hand corner.

  11. Go through the gate and then continue forward through the next gate and then bear right across the field to a stile.

  12. Cross two stiles and then turn left to another stile in the hedge on the left. Cross this stile and turn right to a stile in the field corner.

  13. Cross the stile in the field corner and then turn left to a stile beside a gate. Cross this stile and then continue forward on a track between two ponds to a stile.

  14. Cross the stile and follow an enclosed path to a stile onto an access road. Follow the access road until it turns left, here continue forward over a stile and follow the path to a road.

  15. Cross the road to a path between fences which is slightly to the left. Continue along the path to cross a stile and then follow a path across the field to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and then bear right to a stile.

  16. Cross the stile and maintain the same direction to a stile in the top left corner of the field. Cross the stile and Continue forward to cross another stile on to an enclosed path. Follow this path to a road.

  17. Turn left along the road to a junction and then continue forward across the road to a path opposite and follow this to the Cuckoo Trail (a surfaced path).

  18. Turn right along the Cuckoo Trail. At housing estate continue forward following signs for the Cuckoo Trail.

  19. If you want to go into Horam when you arrive at the old Station go up the steps on the left next to the bridge.

  20. Return to the Cuckoo Trail and follow for about 2.5 miles to its end at a car park in Heathfield.

  21. At the car park continue forward to a road and then cross over and follow enclosed path to the left of an industrial unite

  22. At the road continue forward to a road junction and then turn right. Cross over the bridge and then turn left onto path heading uphill to the High street. Turn left along the High Street back to the car park.
