This walk leaves Burwash at the western end of the High Street and returns by the eastern end. Passing Mottynsden Manor house a Grade II listed building and then Franchise Manor House a Grade II Listed Georgian manor house along the way. There are also some great views of the Rother valley.

Directions: Start Burwash car park.   OS Grid ref. TQ673 246. Nearest post code TN19 7ET.  

  1. Exit the car park onto the High street and then turn left. Continue along the High street to the Catholic Church which is on the right. Take the driveway beside the Church car park and where a footpath goes off to the left stay on the driveway, following it downhill until it ends at a stile.

  2. Cross over the stile to follow a path between fences to a footbridge and a gate; cross the footbridge and go through the gate into a field. Turn left, going down the field with the hedge on the left. At the bottom of the field cross a stile and then continue forward to a footbridge.

  3. Cross the footbridge and then head uphill, keeping the hedge on the right, to a gate in the top right-hand corner of the field (Mottynsden Manor is on the right).

  4. Go through the gate onto a driveway and then turn right. Continue on the driveway to Mottynsden House. Just before you reach the house take a path on the left up a bank into an orchard. Cross a stile into the orchard and then turn right and continue with the hedge on the right to a gate in the corner of the orchard.

  5. Pass through the gate onto a driveway and then turn right. Continuing to the entrance of Franchise Manor and then cross over a stile into a field on your right.

  6. Having crossed the stile, turn left and following a fence which will be on the left, to a kissing gate in the corner of the field. Go through the kissing gate and then continue forward following the hedge on the right to another kissing gate.

  7. Go through the kissing gate and then continue straight ahead on a track to a stile in the corner of the field. Cross the stile and then turn right and follow the edge of the field to a footbridge. Cross over the footbridge and then bear left across the field to a footbridge into the woodland.

  8. Cross over the bridge and then follow the path through the woodland to a footpath gate. Pass through the footpath gate and then bear right uphill across the field. Pass to the right of the trees in the middle of the field to a kissing gate onto a driveway. (you can shorten the walk here by turning right and following Ham Lane back to Burwash)

  9. Cross over the driveway and then follow the path between a fence and woodland to a footpath gate. Go through the footpath gate and then continue forward with the hedge on the right and fence on your left to the corner of the field. In the corner of the field continue forward following a path through the hedge and then continue forward down to the bottom of the field.

  10. At the bottom of the field go through the footpath gate. Cross the footbridge and then continue on the path to a car turning circle. Cross over the turning area and then follow the steep path to the right of a house to reach another turning circle.

  11. Keep right onto a driveway towards some garages before turning left on a path beside a wooden fence. Climb up some steps and then pass to the left of the fire station. Continue forward to the road junction and then turn right.

  12. Ignore the turning to the right, instead, continue uphill to the junction with the main road. Turn right on the main road back to the car park.
