Refreshments: Pubs and tea shop in Burwash. The Wheel Inn, Burwash Weald

The highlight of this walk comes near to the end with the climb onto Park Hill where there are some great views. To start with the walk passes Batemans house and then the millpond. From here the walk follows the Dudwell valley to Willingford Bridge. A short climb through Blackbrooks forest and then through Glazier’s Forge before the river Dudwell is crossed and the climb up Park Hill starts. Remember to look back as you climb Park Hill as the views open up. From Park Hill the villages of Burwash Common and Burwash Weald are visited before field paths are followed back to Burwash.

Directions: Start Burwash car park. OS Grid Ref. TQ673246. Nearby post code TN19 7ET

  1. Leave the car park by the path between the toilets and the Bear Motel into a field and then continue downhill with the hedge on the right to locate a footbridge. Turn right across the footbridge and then follow the fence across the next field to a small gate.

  2. Pass through the gate and then continue in the same direction keeping the hedge on the right to locate a footpath gate in the hedge. Go through the gate and then head downhill to the bottom right hand corner of the field.

  3. Go through the gateway and then continue downhill, keeping the hedge on your left. Cross a stile onto the road and then turn right. Follow the road to Batemans House.

  4. In front of the house take the farm drive on the left. Continue along the farm drive to pass to the left of some cottages and then immediately take the track on the right beside the cottages.

  5. Follow the track around the mill pond and then continue to follow the path beside the mill stream. Cross the millstream where it joins the river and then continue with the river on your right to a kissing gate into a field.

  6. Continue across the field keeping the hedge on the left. When near to the far end of the field, go through the gate on the left and then turn right following the edge of the field to a gate. Sometimes there is an electric fence along the edge of this field, if so you will go through a small gate before you get to the main field gate.

  7. At the main field gate ignore the path going uphill on the left, but continue forward through the gate. Keep going forward across the field, keeping to the left hand edge and then when opposite the bridge that crosses the river on your right continue forward (do not cross the bridge) aiming for the corner of the wood at the top of the hill in front of you.

  8. At the top of the hill locate a kissing gate. Go through the kissing gate and then continue forward crossing two stiles. Continue in the same direction across the next three fields keeping the hedge on your left.

  9. At the end of the third field cross over a stile onto a road.  Cross the road and then pass through the small gate opposite. Continue along the path between two hedges. This path can be very wet to start with but soon has a more solid base.

  10. Where the hedges open out to a field continue forward on a sunken path. Pass to the left of the farm buildings Continue uphill beside the farm house garden and then to a gate in the right hand corner of the field.

  11. Go through the gate and then continue on a track between hedges passing through another gate. Continue following the track through a small rough area to pass through a gap into a field and then continue forward across the field to the opposite hedge.

  12. At the hedge turn left and follow the hedge to a gateway. Go through the gateway and then continue in the same direction, now with the hedge on your left, to a small gate in the corner of the field.

  13. Go through the small gate and then continue across the field to find another small gate into the forest on the left. Pass through the gate and then follow the path through the forest, eventually crossing a small bridge before heading downhill. Continue to following the way markers to a footbridge.

  14. Cross the footbridge and then continue to follow the path uphill away from the gully (the way marker points in the wrong direction so just continue forward after crossing the bridge), eventually reaching a crossing of paths.

  15. Turn right and follow the path downhill to an access road. Turn right on the road. Do not turn left onto the concrete road leading to the stables but continue on the driveway which bears left and then crosses a bridge. Keep right to take the path to the right of the entrance of a house.

  16. Immediately cross the stile on the right into a field and continue forward with the woodland on your right and then pass to the right of a dilapidated barn to a stile. Cross the stile and then bear left to cross the field to a bridge near a large tree. (Keep the steepest part of the field on your left.)

  17. Having located and crossed the bridge, continue forward with a row of large trees on your right to a corner of a woodland. At the corner of the woodland continue forward with the woodland on your left going downhill to a footbridge.

  18. Cross the footbridge and then continue straight up the hill to a gateway in the middle of the hedge at the top of the field. In the next field maintain the same direction to a stile in the top corner of the field.

  19. Cross the stile and then continue forward to a stile in the hedge on the left. Cross this stile and bear right uphill across the field towards a woodland corner. At the woodland corner, maintain the same direction to locate a path into a strip of woodland near the top left hand corner of the field.

  20. Follow the path to a stile into a field and then continue along the left hand side of two fields to a stile. Cross the stile and then turn left to an access road. Turn right along the access road and then at a junction keep right and continue to join a tarmac road.

  21. Continue forward on the tarmac road and at a junction keep right. Then where the road forks go right and then right again. Follow the road downhill to the main road.

  22. Cross the main road and then turn right on the pavement going downhill to pass the Wheel Inn. Continue along the pavement until it ends and then cross the road to go down Burnt House Farm Driveway which curves left then right. Continue downhill, ignoring all turnings to the right until reaching Burnt House Farm House. Here keep right and then where the driveway turns sharp right go through the gate into a field.

  23. Continue down the field to a kissing gate in the fence on your left. Pass through the kissing gate and then bear right to another kissing gate below a brick water tank. Go through the kissing gate and then continue across the field with a fence on your left to a stile.

  24. Cross the stile into the next field and then continue in the same direction to the next gateway. Pass through the gateway into the next field and then head downhill, keeping the hedge on the right to a stile.

  25. Cross over the stile and follow the path through the woodland. Continue across the field on a path which is normally well defined, but if it is not, bear slightly right and cross the field along the top of the hill to a gateway.

  26. Go through the gateway onto a driveway and then turn right, do not enter Rye Green Farm House but follow the old driveway down to Rye Green Farm. Pass between the derelict and overgrown buildings to a stile.

  27. Cross the stile and then head uphill to the top right hand corner of the field. Pass through a gateway and then continue uphill in the next field to a stile in the top right hand corner.

  28. Cross the stile and then follow the path through a small wood to a footpath gate. Go through the footpath gate into a field. Follow the hedge on the left to a stile

  29. Cross the stile back into a small wood and then turn right to follow the path to a field. Cross a stile into the field and then turn left. Continue uphill keeping the hedge on the left. At the top left hand corner of the field cross over a stile and go down the steps to a road. Turn right and follow the road back to the Bear Car Park.
