This is a shorter walk to Bodiam. From Salehurst the walk skirts the norther side of the Rother valley to Bodiam. The return route follows the river Rother.

Start  Robertsbridge Station, Car park (pay and display). Nearby post codeTN32 5DD. OS Grid reference TQ733235.

  1. Exit the car park and then turn left down Station Road until it ends at a T junction. Turn left along the High Street and then turn right into Fair Lane. Continue along Fair lane until it turns sharp left, here continue forward onto a footpath and then across a footbridge.

  2. After crossing the footbridge turn left and follow the path to a road. Turn right along the road and then at a junction by a farm continue forward onto a private road (signed to Grey Friars Farm Abbey and Oast).

  3. Continue along the private road to the second gateway on the left. Go through the gateway and then bear right to cross the field diagonally to the far right corner. Cross over the footbridge and then continue forward on the path to a road. Turn right to the gate into the Church yard.

  4. Enter the Church yard and then take the path on the right-hand side of the Church. At the back of the Church continue forward to a kissing gate into a field.

  5. Follow the left-hand field boundary through two fields to an access road. Cross over the access road and then go through the right-hand gateway. Continue forward with the field boundary on your left, just after the field boundary bends left look for footpath sign in the hedge.

  6. At the footpath sign turn right and follow the path straight across the field to a stile. Cross the stile and then continue straight across the field to another stile.

  7. Cross the stile and then continue forward into an orchard. Turn left and then at a sign turn right onto a path through the orchard. Pass through a hedge and then turn right for a short distance before turning left on a path through the orchard to a stile.

  8. Cross the stile and then continue forward with the hedge on your right to the field corner. Cross a stile in the field corner into the woodland and then turn left. At the path junction keep right. After crossing a footbridge continue forward on a path into a field.

  9. Turn left and follow the field boundary, keeping a lookout for a stile in the hedge on your left. Do not cross the stile but turn right across the field. Pass to the right of a small woodland that is in the middle of the field and then head towards a gate in the middle of the far hedge.

  10. Do not go through the gate but cross a stile a few yards to the left of the gate. Continue forward with the fence hedge on your right to the field corner and then turn left to a stile onto the road.

  11. Cross the road and then go through a kissing gate into a field. Continue straight across the field to a stile.

  12. Cross the stile and then continue forward a few yards before turning left over a stile onto a path through the woodland. Continue forward beside a lake to then cross a footbridge onto an access road. Turn right along the access road to a gate.

  13. Continue forward through two gates onto a track and then when you arrive at a junction continue straight ahead.

  14. At the Old Cricket Pavilion continue along the access road which ends at the village of Bodiam.

  15. Turn right along the road and the entrance to the castle will be on your left. If you don’t want to visit the Castle continue pass the entrance and then just before the bridge over the river turn right down some steps to a path beside the river. Continue on the path beside the river for just over a mile, where it ends at a road.

  16. Turn left along the road and cross over the river. Just before the next bridge turn right over a stile into a field. Continue forward following the left-hand field boundary to the far corner of the field.

  17. In the field corner follow the path up the flood prevention embankment and then continue following the path along the top of the embankment with the river on your right. When the path leaves the embankment and enters a field turn right keeping the embankment on your right.

  18. You soon join a path between the embankment and a post and rail fence. Continue to follow this path to a stile.

  19. Cross the stile and then continue straight across the field to another stile onto an access road. Turn right along the access road. At a junction by a farm continue forward and then just before the main road turn left onto a path to a footbridge.

  20. Cross the footbridge and then continue forward on the road. At the junction with the High Street turn left along the High Street and then turn right into Station road and follow back to the station.
