Refreshments: The Old Vine Cousley Wood

This walk leaves Wadhurst and heads down to Bewl Water, the largest inland body of water in the south east. The around Bewl water path is followed for a short while before the walk leaves the reservoir at Little Butts Farm. The route follows Little Butts Farm access road for about half a mile to the small village of Cousley Wood. From Cousley Wood the Sussex Border Path is followed through the small hamlet of Woods Green and onto Great Shoesmiths Farm. The walk continues to Rockrobin a small cluster of houses on the outskirts of Wadhurst. From here the main road is followed back to Wadhurst.

It can be difficult to park here when the school is open. If so, there is a car park and roadside parking in Washwell lane beside the White Hart Pub.

 

  1. Leave the car park by the vehicle entrance and then cross the main road and continue along Blacksmiths Lane.

  2. Continue along Blacksmiths lane to a sharp left hand bend and then continue forward on a track to Little Pell Farm. Passing to the left of a house and then keep forward on the track keeping the farm buildings to your right.

  3. Continue on the track through gates, eventually passing to the right of a pond. Track turns into a path to a stile. Cross the stile and then continue forward down the left hand side of a field to a stile.

  4. Cross the stile and then continue forward to a path junction. Turn left at the junction and then continue on the round Bewl Water path. Pass the first footpath and then continue until the woodland on your left ends. Here turn left onto an enclosed path.

  5. Continue on the enclosed path passing to the left of a large barn before turning right and then passing to the left of a house. After passing the house turn left and follow the access road to the main road.

  6. Turn left along the main road passing The Old Vine pub and then after passing Monks Lane (on your right) look for a footpath on the right.

  7. Turn right onto the footpath and then continue forward with the hedge/fence on the right to a stile. Cross the stile and then continue forward with the hedge on the left to another stile. Cross this stile and then continue forward with a fence on the right through two fields to a road.

  8. Turn right along the road and then turn left into Woods Green Lane. Continue along Woods Green Lane to a cross roads and then turn right.

  9. Continue along this road until it ends at Trewyck House. Here turn right onto a path into a field. In the field turn left keeping the hedge and tennis court on your left. Continue forward on an enclosed path to a field and then keep field boundary on your right through two fields to a stile.

  10. Cross the stile and then continue forward across the field passing to the left of a small woodland before heading towards a farm. Go through a gap in the hedge and then bear slightly left across the field to a gate.

  11. Go through the gate and then pass to the right of large oak tree and pond. Go up steps beside a barn and through a gate into what used to be the farmyard. Turn left and follow the access road to a lane.

  12. Turn left along the lane heading downhill and then uphill. When you reach the garages on your right turn right onto a bridle path.

  13. Follow the bridleway until it ends at a road. Turn right along the road following it round a left hand bend before turning left. Continue along this road and then go straight on onto a path into woodland. Follow the path to gate into Spike Island.

  14. Go through the gate and then continue forward across the access road. Follow the waymarked path behind the summerhouse and then onto an enclosed path.

  15. Go through a gate and then continue forward on the access track to the main road. Turn left along the main road following this all the way back to Wadhurst and the car park.
