Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps 124 and 136

Refreshments: Woods Corner, The Swan inn

This walk passes through National Trust meadows down to the river Dudwell which at certain times of the year are full of wild flowers and butterflies. From the river Dudwell the walk then climbs to Burwash Weald from where there is a steep climb up Park Hill. When passing in front of Henhurst Farm house there are good views over the Dudwell valley and across the valley the spire of Dallington Church can be seen. The walk continues through meadows, crossing the river Dudwell again and then on to Glazier’s Forge.  From Glazier’s Forge the walk climbs through a forest and on to Woods Corner. From here on a clear day Eastbourne and the Southdowns can be seen.

.

Leaving Woods Corner the route passes the Sugar Loaf, also known as Fuller's point, this folly stands 35 feet (10.7 m) high.  Legend has it that John "Mad Jack" Fuller made a bet that he could see the spire of Dallington Church from his house, Rose Hill in Brightling. When he realized that this was not true he had workmen hurriedly erect this folly in order to win the bet. It is thought to have been built in the early 1820s and gets its name from the conical loaf form that sugar was sold in at that time. The walk continues across Brightling Down with fantastic views. Towards the end of the walk the route passes Batemans mill pond and then Batemans house

  2. Climb the steps and then cross the stile. Continue forward with a hedge/ fence on your right to the field corner. Cross the stile on your right and follow the path to the next stile. Cross this stile and then turn right to a footpath gate in the field corner.

  3. Go through the footpath gate and then over a footbridge. Follow the path to the left through the small wood to a stile into a field.

  4. Cross the stile into the field and then continue forward, downhill to a gateway to the right of a small wood.

  5. In the next field bear right heading diagonally across the field to the far bottom corner. Do not cross the stile in the corner but turn left to the next gateway and footpath gate.

  6. Go through the footpath gate and then turn left keeping the hedge and ditch to your left. When half way across the field, bear right away from the hedge to a foot bridge over the river Dudwell.

  7. Having crossed the river, turn right to follow the path to a kissing gate. Continue across the next field, following the hedge on your left. When near to the far end of the field, go through the gate on the left then turn right following the edge of the field to a gate. Sometimes there is an electric fence alongside the footpath. If so you will go through a small gate before the field gate.

  8. Continue through the main field gate and then across the field to a bridge over the river. Cross the bridge and then turn left following the field edge to a kissing gate. Continue through the kissing gate into the wood and continue on the path to another kissing gate into a field.

  9. Pass through the kissing gate and then follow the right hand edge of the field uphill to the corner of the field. In the field corner turn left and follow the fence to another kissing gate.

  10. Pass through the gate and then bear right uphill to a kissing gate. Go through the gate and then turn right uphill to a gate onto a driveway. Follow the driveway uphill and continue following it around to the left and then right onto a main road.

  11. Cross over the main road and then turn left on the pavement. Follow the main road to the Wheel Inn and then cross the road and continue down Willingford Lane. Just past the end of the first garden on the right, take the path on the right. Continue on the path downhill and through a small gate, cross a footbridge and then continue uphill through a wood to a stile into a field.

  12. Cross the stile and then continue uphill with the hedge on the left to a stile onto a farm drive. Cross the stile and then turn left along the drive passing to the right of some farm buildings. Continue along the access road to the gate into the farmhouse garden.

  13. Go through the footpath gate on the left and then continue forward through two more footpath gates keeping garden fence on your right.

  14. At the end of the garden follow a path down through the wood to cross a stile into a field and then continue down the right hand side of the field. Ignore the path going right over a stile. Instead, continue to a stile in the corner of the field.

  15. Cross the stile and continue in the same direction downhill across the next two fields to a footbridge.

  16. Cross the footbridge and continue forward in the field with a fence on your right. At the fence corner continue forward downhill to a bridge over a ditch.

  17. Having crossed the ditch continue across the field heading towards an old barn. Cross a stile in the fence and then pass to the left of the barn and continue forward to a stile.

  18. Cross the stile and then turn left on the access road and follow it over a bridge then round to the right. At a footpath sign turn left onto a path going uphill through a forest. Continue to a crossing of paths.

  19. Turn right and then continue to follow the path to where it forks at an old quarry. Take the left fork, passing to the left of the quarry (the right fork goes downhill to access road).

  20. At the next fork, keep left on the upper track, then at a crossing of tracks keep forward onto a small path. Follow this small path through the forest, crossing small bridges to eventually go down some steps to cross a larger footbridge.

  21. Just after crossing the bridge, keep right, and then at the access road, turn left and then left again onto a bridleway between hedges. Continue along this bridleway to join the road at Fuggles House.

  22. Turn right on the road and continue until you pass Staceys House on the left, then take the footpath over a stile on the left following the path round behind a pond and through a  wood to a field.

  23. On emerging into the field, turn right and continue uphill to a stile a few yards to the left of a telegraph pole. Cross the stile and then continue on an enclosed path to the road.

  24. Turn left along the main road passing the Swan Inn and then continuing out of the village. Pass the end of the speed limit sign and then take the footpath on the left beside the cricket ground to the Sugar Loaf.

  25. Continue past the Sugar Loaf. Cross the stile into the field and then continue forward through the field to a gate. Go through the gate and then follow the enclosed path to the main road.

  26. Turn right on road and then after passing Downgate cottages on the left, take path through the right hand of two gates on the left into a field. There is normally a distinct path across the field, but if not then head across field to locate a path into the woodland about half way down the right hand side of the field.

  30. Bear left across the field towards the large oak trees in the hedge on opposite side of the field. Cross the stile and footbridge and then another stile into a field. Bear right, and head up to the top right hand corner of the field to cross a stile beside a water tank.

  31. Continue up the right hand side of the next field to cross a stile onto an access road. Cross the access road and then go through a gate into a small field. Go straight across the field to a gate and stile.

  32. Having crossed the stile, continue downhill with woodland on the right and then go through a gap in the hedge and continue through the next field to the far right hand corner. Cross the stile in the corner of the field and then continue forward between fences to cattle handling pens.

  33. On reaching the cattle pens, cross the stile on the left and follow the fence to cross the stile onto a road. Turn left on the road and after passing Perch Hill Farm on your right take the next driveway on the right. Where the driveway turns left, continue straight ahead to pass to the right of the house and then onto a small path through a forest to a turning area.

  34. At the turning area, continue forward to a ride and then go left but almost immediately there are two small paths on the right. Take the second path following it to kissing gate. Go through the gate and then continue forward downhill with a fence on the right to a small gate.
